Brown Trout

Britain's native species of trout

Brown trout, also known as River or Lake trout, is the species of trout native to Britain and other European countries. Like other trouts, it is a member of the salmon family.

The freshwater variety of brown trout is found in a variety of habitats, from small brooks up to rivers and lakes, while the saltwater variety is known as sea trout and is typically found in north European coastal waters.

Brown trout is a delicious fish to eat, and many consider it to be superior to it's widely farmed cousin the rainbow trout. Getting hold of it can be difficult though, as there are very few trout farms rearing this species.
