Cromer, on the Norfolk coast, is famous for the quality of its crabs
Cromer crabs, from the town of Cromer on the north Norfolk coast, are famous amongst seafood affcionados for their sweet, tender flesh, and high proportion of white meat to dark.
It is a member of the brown crab family, and is generally available from spring to mid winter.
Norfolk fishermen have harvested this delicacy for centuries, although the number of crab boats operating from Cromer today has fallen to around a dozen, working 200 or so crab pots.
Advocates of the Cromer crab say that in a side by side comparison, it will win out against any other variety of crab - even ones from nearby Norfolk waters.
