Local food for local people!
Food Miles is the term used to describe how far food has travelled between where it was produced and where it is bought.
In these days of year-round availability of all kinds of foods at your local supermarket, the food you eat can have travelled thousands of miles before it gets to you.
Quite apart from the environmental concerns of transporting food hundreds or thousands of miles, widely travelled food will likely be of a lower quality according to food miles campaigners. For example, fruit will often be picked before ripe so as to ensure a sufficient shelf life for the travel and distribution time involved.
Such is the concern over food miles, there are steps in progress to limit the distance foodstuffs can travel while still qualifying for the organic label.
