A quality mark of lamb raised on the high heather moors of North Derbyshire
High Peak Lamb is a brand name of a Derbyshire butcher, J.W. Mettrick & Son, and is used to refer to the meat from quality lambs which graze on the heather moors of High Peak, North Derbyshire. The lamb is only sourced from farms that support best environmental practices in the Peak District.
The meat is guaranteed to be born and raised within 10 miles of where it is slaughtered and prepared for sale, in Mettrick's own abattoir in Glossop, the only small scale butcher-owned facility in Derbyshire.
It is this short journey and associated high standards of welfare that leads to high quality lamb with fully traceable provenance.
High Peak Lamb is primarily sold in Mettrick's two butchers shops in Glossop and Hadfield, both in the High Peak, although an accreditation scheme is in operation that means selected butchers in other areas can also sell the meat, and butchered full or half lambs are also available to buy online.
Update: J.W. Mettrick & Son are the winners of the 'Best Local Food Retailer' category in the BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards 2005.
