A commercially reared species of trout
Rainbow trout is a member of the salmon family, and is the most widely available kind of trout in Britain thanks to widespread farming.
It is not a fish native to the UK, but was brought over from the rivers and lakes of north-western America.
Quality can vary widely, with trout reared in small lakes or even tanks often tasting 'muddy', and with flabby flesh because of a lack of exercise. Those raised in running water or even tidal waters are generally considered to be of a higher standard.
Environmental concerns have been raised about trout farming, with infestation with sea lice which can spread to wild salmon populations a particular concern.
